Paolo Maldini: Defender, Italy
126 caps / 6 goals
Maldini is probably the greatest left-sided defender of his generation. He started in the Milan youth system and made his league debut aged 16 under the experienced eye of his footballing father, Cesare. He has stayed loyal to Milan ever since, winning the European Cup in 1989, 1990, 1993 and 2003 - the latter occasion as captain. He is a calming and charismatic leader on the pitch, a defensive stalwart for Italy and has been an influential teacher for many young Italian players. He led his country to the finals of the 1994 World Cup and the 2000 European Championships, becoming Italy’s most capped player.
